Choosing joy is powerful act of resilience and resistance. The effects of systemic oppressions, trauma, media content, and the communities in which we live often cultivate contraction and challenge to our capacity to welcome joy and pleasure.
Yet, when we practice choosing joy, we practice towards noticing, savouring, and expanding feelings of joy. And, as we expand our feelings of joy, we expand a powerful internal resource. Connecting with joy (and pleasure) can support us in coming back into presence, and be a healing tool during times of physical, emotional, or spiritual pain or challenge. The chemicals of joy and pleasure (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins, etc) have been shown to often outstrip the effects of antidepressants and other pharmaceuticals. And, choosing joy means choosing more and more of what makes our hearts sing!
